Bali Virgin Beach Hotel: A Ukrainian Architectural Gem in Bali, Inspired by the Garuda

In 2025, the Ukrainian architectural studio Martins Architects earned international acclaim by winning an award at the Asia Pacific Property Awards 2025–2026 for their project, the Bali Virgin Beach Hotel.Located on the picturesque coast of Bali, Indonesia, this hotel spans more than 9,000 square meters and represents a new vision in architecture—merging innovation, sustainability, and deep respect for local culture.

Architecture Inspired by the Myth of Garuda

The hotel's design draws inspiration from the mythological bird Garuda—a symbol of strength, wisdom, and protection in Hindu mythology.Garuda is a sacred figure deeply rooted in Indonesian culture and is featured on the country’s national emblem. The roof's form resembles the bird’s outstretched wings, evoking a sense of flight over the ocean and symbolizing harmony between architecture and local tradition.

Innovation and Sustainability: The Role of BIM Technology

The project was developed using advanced BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, allowing for comprehensive planning that included:

  • Tidal and wave dynamics:
The building placement was optimized with ocean tides in mind, ensuring long-term safety and comfort for guests.
  • Sun movement analysis:
The rooftop layout was carefully planned so that seating areas remain shaded during the hottest times of the day throughout the year.
  • Seismic safety:
Given Bali’s earthquake-prone geography, the hotel’s structures were designed to withstand seismic activity and keep guests safe.
  • Integration with the landscape and infrastructure:
The design respects the natural topography, preserving the site's original terrain and connecting seamlessly to the existing road network.

Eco-Conscious Approach and Respect for Nature

Environmental sensitivity was a key priority throughout the development:

  • Tree preservation:
Every effort was made to preserve existing trees on the site. Some were gently relocated to blend harmoniously into the landscape design.
  • Use of local materials:
The hotel features traditional Balinese roofing and natural materials such as timber, helping to reduce its environmental footprint and reflect the cultural context.
  • Sustainable water systems:
Innovative water reuse systems were implemented for irrigation and technical needs, along with modern bio-treatment facilities to manage resources responsibly.

A Waterfall at the Heart of the Hotel

At the center of the hotel lies a spectacular waterfall—not just a design feature, but an immersive sensory experience.
It cools the surrounding air naturally and welcomes guests with the calming power of water, anchoring them in the beauty and serenity of Bali’s untamed nature.
